Ayurveda is a medical practice derived from the Sanskrit
words ‘Ayur’ meaning life, and ‘Veda’ meaning
knowledge.
Its origins go back more than 6000 years and it was spread to Sri Lanka around 6th century BC by Buddhist monks, where it became the main form of medical practice for centuries. Sri Lanka has its own Ayurvedic system based on a series of prescriptions handed down from generation to generation. Sinhalese kings quickened the development of Ayurveda. Some kings were Ayurvedic physicians and built hospitals in the ancient capital of Anuradhapura and other cities such as Mihintale, where ruins of Ayurveda hospitals can still be seen. King Buddhadasa (398 AD) was the most prominent physician and wrote the ‘Sarartha Sangrahaya’, which is read by physicians even to this day. He was famed for treating soldiers, horses, and elephants. Ayurvedic physicians
enjoyed a noble position in the social hierarchy due to its royal patronage.
More than 75 per cent of the island’s population depends on this
traditional medicine system because of its efficacy and no side effects. |

Ayurveda is a natural healing method. It is a complete
and holistic healing system, which promotes general well being and seeks
not only to cure disease but also to rejuvenate the body by increasing
immunity against disease.
It has also proved to be very effective in curbing present day stress and in promoting a positive mental attitude and relaxation of the mind. Users of the gentle system of holistic treatment say it is based on the observation of humans and plants in the search for balance in body and mind. Ayurveda is based on the principle that everyone has a unique mixture of three energies, which are: vata (air), pita (fire) and kapha (earth). When one of these energies gets out of balance illness can arise and that is when treatment is needed. Herbs and natural medicines are used to restore this inward balance and harmony. But you don’t have to be sick to enjoy the benefits of an ayurveda massage or bath. Among the benefits it is credited with are: slowing the ageing process, prolonging lifespan, improving digestive functions and eyesight and correcting sleep disturbances. Sri Lanka Ayurvedic physicians are required to undergo seven years of training and spend at least a year in a conventional hospital. Practitioners prescribe
gentle herbs, diets, hydrotherapy and medical enemas to treat an astonishing
array of illnesses, including diabetes, asthma, arthritis, high blood
pressure, alcoholism and obesity. |
